In 2007, Naturefund started its first international afforestation project in Honduras. Together with the Asociación Patuca we aimed to protect the rainforest in the Patuca National Park. Together, we planted trees and tested here for the first time the sustainable cultivation method Dynamic Agroforestry. Our goal was to plant 50,000 trees. At the end of the project in March 2015, we counted all trees planted: In fact, we planted 105,283 trees! We thank the 3,315 godparents who planted trees with us in the Patuca National Park! more
Start: December 2007
End: April 2015
The Patuca National Park is located in the south of Honduras bordering Nicaragua.
The Patuca National Park covers a size of 3,776 km². About 60 percent of the park is still covered by pristine forest. 40 percent of the protected area has now been degraded or completely cut down.
The project partner is Asociación Patuca, a non-profit nature conservation organization from Honduras, that designs and implements the protection and preservation of the Patuca National Park. They are commissioned by the Government of Honduras.
There are many special animals in the rainforest of Honduras, for example the rare harpy, the jaguar, the big anteater, the margay, the beautiful and eye-catching tucan and many other animals.
