Naturefund implements sustainable garden projects across Germany together with toom and the Lebenshilfe. Soon, bees and bumblebees are buzzing in kindergartens and residential facilities. There is still something to nibble for the gardeners.

Flowering gardens

Garden areas of twenty day care centers and living facilities will be transformed into "flowering gardens" in the next few weeks. "Flowering gardens" is the name of the nationwide project of the nature conservation organization Naturefund, the DIY chain toom and the Lebenshilfe. The aim is to create a bee- and insect-friendly garden with vegetables, herbs and fruits, using the efficient planting method "Dynamic Agroforestry" who is used by Naturefund worldwide.

The DIY chain Toom advocates intensely for the protection of the environment and species and is organizing a nationwide sustainability week from 26 February to 3 March. During this time, toom will donate one euro to the "Flowering Gardens" project for every article sold in its DIY stores from the assortment of organic trees and the peat-free "toom" organic soil. With this support,  special planting concepts, who are leading to healthy and species-rich gardens, are created in the facilities of the Lebenshilfe. Hobby gardeners of all ages can discover the fascinating interplay between plants, soil and animals that is typical for the dynamic agroforestry. Bees and insects, which are essential for a working ecosystem, are given special attention in the construction of the planting plans.

Biodiversity and synergies between plants

The dynamic agroforestry uses natural principles for cultivation like no other method. This includes, for example, high biodiversity or synergies between the plants. The efficient process builds up a natural plant system with a strong biomass production. Since the method leads to healthy plants with a high yield of fruits, herbs and vegetables, even allotment gardeners can achieve great success and create their own ecosystems.
